  • Westbrook Chemical Engine Company No. 1 is 100% volunteer and always needs new members.

    Westbrook Chemical Engine Company No. 1 is the first-responder to all emergencies in Westbrook and provides fire protection, emergency medical services and fire prevention education to the residents of the town. Westbrook Chemical Engine Company No. 1 is part of a long-standing tradition in the United States that encompasses generation after generation of families and is part of an institution that dates back to the days of Benjamin Franklin.

    Nationwide there are over 1.1 million firefighters – 75% of those are volunteers. Volunteer firefighters save the nation over $37 billion dollars a year. That means each volunteer saves the country approximately $45,000 per year!

    Unfortunately many fire departments across the nation today are finding it increasingly difficult to recruit and retain new members. While the number of volunteer firefighters has increased from its all-time low in 1989 the problem of recruitment and retention is still serious in many areas.

    While volunteer fire departments across the country struggle to recruit and retain members the public’s expectations of the fire department are greater today than ever before.

    Many volunteer fire departments like Westbrook Chemical Engine Company No. 1 have seen their volume of emergency calls increase between 25-75% since the early 1980s, especially for departments that provide medical services.

    Westbrook Chemical Engine Company No. 1 provides assistance for emergencies such as fires, fire alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, broken water pipes, natural gas leaks, medical emergencies, vehicle accidents, hazardous materials spills, mysterious odors, structural collapses, extrications, water rescues, and even bomb threats or terrorist incidents.

    When the public calls for assistance in any of these situations, the fire department must be ready to respond. Westbrook Chemical Engine Company No. 1 is here for the community 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

  • To become a member of the Westbrook Fire Department:

  • You must be at least eighteen years of age and shall hold a valid State of Connecticut Driver’s License (if you’re between 14 and 19 you can join the Juniors).

    You must have resided within the Town of Westbrook for at least six months prior to submitting an application.

    To provide proof of residency you will need a rental agreement, vehicle registration or town tax bill.

    The residency requirement is waived for those who have been an active member of another fire department within the past year and have a letter of recommendation from the applicant’s previous chief or superior officer.
