Juniors

  • Are you between the ages of 14 and 19 and want to become a Firefighter?

  • The Westbrook Fire Department’s Junior Firefighter Program is seeking new members.

The need for well-trained and highly-motivated volunteer firefighters and EMS personnel throughout America’s communities has never been greater. Over 70% of the fire and rescue personnel who protect our nation are volunteers. Yet, statistics show that while fire departments’ call volumes are steadily increasing, the number of volunteers is decreasing.

The Westbrook Fire Department started its Junior Firefighter program in 1984. In 2004 the Westbrook Fire Department re-established the program to provide an opportunity for Westbrook’s youth interested in emergency services with training and experience to prepare them to be volunteer or career firefighters and EMS personnel.

The Westbrook Junior Firefighters train with the regular members during department drills, participate in their own drills and monthly meetings, as well as respond to emergencies on Westbrook Fire Department apparatus. Being a junior firefighter is a rewarding way to learn the skills used in firefighting and emergency medical services. The jobs that junior firefighters do free up qualified senior firefighters to perform other crucial tasks.

Westbrook Junior Firefighters also participate in fire prevention, parades, the annual carnival and other special events, and all training, uniforms and personal protective equipment are provided at no cost by the Westbrook Fire Department.

The Westbrook Fire Department takes safety very seriously. Being a firefighter can be a dangerous job and there are laws in place to protect minors. Learn if you have what it takes to be a Westbrook Junior Firefighter in a safe and fun environment.
